Aperio Technologies and Applied Spectral Imaging announce new products in July
Two new digital imaging products launched this month show that vendors are advancing the capabilities of digital imaging and digital pathology systems. Each company’s new product announcement touts the value of computer-aided diagnosis and computer pattern recognition for anatomic pathologists.
On July 9, Aperio Technologies, Inc., of Vista, California, launched its Digital IHC Solution for immunohistochemistry that features integrated image analysis for quantification of breast cancer. Aperio says that this is the only commercially available FDA-cleared system that allows pathologists to run quantitative IHC image analysis while reading slides on a computer monitor.
Aperio’s Digital IHC Solution includes FDA-cleared algorithms for HER2, ER, and PR stained breast specimens. In addition, the system comes with image analysis algorithms that can be tuned for different tissue types (such as breast, colon, and prostate), different stains (such as HER2, ER, PR, Ki-67, P53, and EGFR), reagents (such as Dako and Ventana Medical Systems) or to correlate results with other test methods (such as FISH and CISH).
Aperio states its system is capable of producing reports from slides in less than 30 minutes, thusimproving clinical workflow and cutting turn-around time.The system also can help pathologists make more informed decisions and boost the accuracy and consistency of test results, the company said.
On July 7, Applied Spectral Imaging of Migdal Haemek, Israel, announced the availability of its PathEx Duo, a detection system for doubly stained specimens. The PathEx Duo system gives pathologists a statistical description of the examined tissue supporting diagnosis when two stains are used on tissue. “By allowing the evaluation of slides that are doubly stained, the system makes the common, cumbersome practice of comparing two different tissue sections unnecessary and redundant,” said Limor Shiposh, the company’s CEO. By classifying each cell and marking it according to its class association, the system provides results in four categories: objects that are unstained, singly stained (of each stain), and doubly stained, the company said.
Dark Daily observes that these two product announcements, just days apart, demonstrate how digital imaging and digital pathology systems are advancing in function and capability. Collectively, this class of products is giving anatomic pathologists new ways to evaluate tissue and provide a more detailed diagnosis. Further, Aperio Technologies and Applied Spectral Imaging are just two companies in a field that is expanding at a fast pace. For that reason, the uptake of digital imaging products and digital pathology systems is predicted to continue at an accelerating pace.
