Focus Conference in Glasgow puts spotlight on how medical laboratories must deliver more testing with less reimbursement
Clinical pathology laboratory services might be considered “under siege” in the United Kingdom. That’s because clinical laboratories are facing significant reductions to their annual budgets, even as health trusts throughout the country push for regional integration and further consolidation of laboratory testing services.
This week in Glasgow, Scotland, the Association for Clinical Biochemistry is conducting Focus, its annual meeting. This large gathering for the laboratory medicine profession in the United Kingdom offers attendees a wide spectrum of topics and speakers relating to laboratory testing. Clinical pathology laboratories in the United States and other developed countries across the globe face an unprecedented double-whammy. On one hand, the ongoing explosion of genetic and molecular knowledge gives pathologists and clinical laboratories incredible new tools for diagnosing disease and guiding therapy.
On the other hand, funding for government health programs in the United States and other developed countries is failing to keep pace with demand for health services and the need to pay for all the sophisticated molecular diagnostics and complex therapies now coming to market.

Both companies are important suppliers to clinical laboratories and research labs
In recent days, news surfaced that Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE: TMO) was offering $6 billion to acquire Millipore Corporation (NYSE:MIL). Neither company has confirmed the offer, but yesterday Millipore issued a statement that its Directors were “evaluating strategic options.”
Should Thermo Fisher acquire Millipore, or should Millipore find another buyer, it will mean the same thing: more consolidation among vendors who are major suppliers for clinical pathology laboratories. This would continue a global consolidation trend among clinical laboratory suppliers and in vitro diagnostics (IVD) manufacturers that reaches back more than a decade and a half.
